Canadians, hello from Georgetown! It is great to see that you are interested in becoming a Hoya. I am a Junior and an International Political Economy major. Georgetown is truly an amazing place and an excellent school. From the students, to the classes, to the campus – going to Georgetown gives you access to a vast range of opportunity. I have found the courses here interesting and stimulating, and my professors are not only knowledgeable in their fields, but also engaging and approachable.

The academics are complemented by an incredible experience outside of the classroom. There are clubs and activities that suit all interests, and if you cannot find one that you like, then definitely start your own! I am involved in the Georgetown University Alumni and Student Federal Credit Union (the largest student-run financial institution in the country), the Georgetown Ice Hockey Team, Hilltop Consultants, and the Lecture Fund, which attracts speakers from across the globe – Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, the King of Jordan, critic Michael Moore, and Canadian Lt.-General Roméo Dallaire.

DC is also a great city to go to school in and has a wealth of resources. There is an impressive network of museums, numerous special events, and lots of activities for entertainment. A little while ago, I went to visit the Corcoran Gallery of Art to see an Andy Warhol exhibit with some friends, and I was also able go see the President Bush’s Inauguration two years ago. Many students take advantage of the internship opportunities in DC, such as those in Congress or the Canadian Embassy – which is just down the street from the Capitol. At the same time, when I was looking at schools, I wanted to make sure that they did not lose their identity amid the activity of the city. I found that at Georgetown. While our campus is located in the city and close to some of the best shopping and dining, the university definitely retains its sense of community and its beautiful campus provides a unique college atmosphere.

I think that what you will find most amazing about Georgetown are your fellow Hoyas. They are intelligent, fun, and they bring a diverse set of backgrounds and interests from all over the world. It is this strong international presence and focus that is one of Georgetown’s most unique characteristics. While there are some cultural differences, Canadians are definitely and comfortably a part of the Georgetown community – aside from the occasion “eh” jokes, of course. The backgrounds that we all bring to campus help to make this such an extraordinary place for all of its students.

It is a great opportunity to be here and it has been an experience that I have truly enjoyed. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. I love being on the Hilltop and I think you will find that you do too. I hope to see you next fall!

Hey! My name is Ariana Cappuccino and I’m in my fourth year at Georgetown. I’m a Theology major with a Biology minor, and I’m also Pre-Med. I’ve actually moved around quite a bit, but when I was in high school I lived in Kleinburg, which is not too far north of Toronto. The town is only a few blocks long, so the only reason you might have heard of it is if you’ve ever taken a field trip to the McMichael Gallery.

When I was looking at universities, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to move to the States, but I definitely made the right decision - I love Georgetown. The campus and the neighborhood are beautiful. And when you’re feeling a little more adventurous, it’s fun to take advantage of downtown DC and the nightlife. The National Mall and all of the Smithsonian museums are fun to explore, and you can always check out the monuments. The Washington Monument is no CN Tower, but it’s pretty cool anyway.

Not only is the city awesome, but there are an unlimited number of activities to get involved in on campus. In addition to working with GAAP, I became a certified Emergency Medical Technician during my freshman year. These days I ride as an Acting Crew Chief for GERMS, the school’s EMS agency. I was involved with a lot of community service stuff in high school, and now I work as a volunteer medic in the DC area, including helping evacuees from the Gulf Coast who were brought to the DC Armory after Hurricane Katrina.

Obviously, I can’t ignore the fact that the quality of the education I’m receiving here at Georgetown is incredible. Classes are interesting, and the professors are never too wrapped up with other commitments to have a discussion outside of class. Whatever your expectations of a university may be, I’m sure that Georgetown won’t fall short – yes, we even have something resembling winter here in DC!

I would be happy to hear any questions or concerns that you have.  If you’re planning a visit to Georgetown at some point during the year, email me and we can meet up for coffee and a quick chat. Best of luck with your university search, and don’t forget – Hoya Saxa!
